Fringe Festival: The Wild and Wonderful World of the Avant-Garde

Wednesday, September 18, 2024, Dryden Theatre

Animation, or the art of sequential drawn images to imply motion, has been around longer than the motion picture, with devices such as the zoetrope and the phenakistoscope. With the advent of film, however, artists were able to tackle grander subjects—longer pieces with a through-line to follow. Whether narrative or expressionist, these animated films took many forms, and continue to allow filmmakers to explore complex ideas and themes to this day.

This program, consisting entirely of films from the archives of the George Eastman Museum, covers nearly a century of cinema and a variety of animation from traditional hand-drawing to silhouette animation and stop-motion. The program features filmmakers Mary Ellen Bute, Norman McLaren, and the Brothers Quay, among others, and is ideal for both the uninitiated and those looking to explore animation and experimental film more deeply.
