RJFF. Carl Laemmle, a German-Jewish immigrant, was one of the most powerful men during Hollywood’s early years. He basically invented the modern movie business and eventually founded Universal Pictures. Along the way he crossed paths and more with the likes of Thomas Edison and George Eastman. Laemmle turned out dozens of successful movies and had an eye for amazing talent; he hired many who went on to become Hollywood legends. But his legacy ranged further than California. He was a champion of humanitarian causes and quietly saved over 300 Jewish families from Nazi Germany.
