(Lewis Gilbert, US 1966, 114 min., 35mm)
Alfie Elkin (Michael Caine) is an inveterate ladies’ man, spending his days as a chauffeur and his nights in the arms of beautiful women, regardless of their relationship status. He is ending a relationship with the married Siddie at the same time his girlfriend, Gilda, becomes pregnant. Gilda decides to have the child and, though he enjoys the boy’s company, refuses to settle down. Gilda moves on and bars Alfie from having contact with his son. Alfie continues to seduce women, but wonders at what he is missing from a committed relationship. All alone, Alfie decides to change his ways, as long as it’s not too late.
