Black Orpheus

Thursday, July 28, 2022, 7:30 p.m., Dryden Theatre

(Marcel Camus, Brazil/France/Italy 1959, 100 min., 35mm)

When Eurydice (Marpessa Dawn) arrives in Rio de Janeiro, she is greeted by a trolley driver named Orfeu (Breno Mello) and the pair instantly fall in love. There’s just one problem—Orfeu is engaged to Mira (Lourdes de Oliveira). Orfeu, however,  is not very enthusiastic about the upcoming nuptials. Upon getting home, Orfeu finds that Eurydice is staying next door, but she is on the run from Death himself. When Death decides to pay her a visit, Orfeu springs to action and chases Death only to subsequently have to join Eurydice on her run from the masked man. Black Orpheus is a retelling of the mythological story of Orpheus and Eurydice, filmed on location in Brazil.
