Borderland

Friday, November 5, 2021, 7:30 p.m., Dryden Theatre

(Grenzland, Andreas Voigt, Germany 2020, 97 min., DCP)

Returning to the Dryden for the third time, director Andreas Voigt brings his latest film, a follow-up, of sorts, to his 1992 film Borderland—A Charm. In this most recent film, he explores the lives of people living on or near the border between Germany and Poland. Through interviews and footage of languid landscapes, Voigt uncovers a region steeped in its past and geography while making its way in the modern world. Immigrants from Greece and Syria are profiled alongside people who have lived in the same house all their lives. The relative idea of freedom is contrasted with discussions of nationalism, regionalism, and religion, while at the same time images of decay and destruction seem to be giving way to nature’s reclamation. As much about the people as the land, this wonderful film observes the ebb and flow of stasis and change along the Oder River.

Please note: This is a partner film screening that does not require proof of COVID-19 vaccination. Masks are still required for all patrons, regardless of vaccination status.
