(Vincente Minnelli, US 1954, 108 min., 35mm)
Considered a failure at the time of its release, this adaptation of the Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe musical has become a perennial favorite. Vincente Minnelli brings Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse together to dance for the last time. Tommy Albright (Kelly) and pal Jeff Douglas (Van Johnson) stumble upon Brigadoon in the Scottish Highlands, an enchanted town that appears for only one day every one hundred years. It’s love at first sight for Tommy and Fiona Campbell (Charisse), who can’t leave the town for fear of breaking the enchantment. Kelly’s performance of the songs “Almost Like Being in Love” and “The Heather on the Hill” is surpassed only by his dance with Charisse among the Highlands in a reprise of the latter song.
