The Brink of Life (1958)

(Nära livet, Ingmar Bergman, Sweden 1958, 84 min., 35mm)

Bergman's intense, almost documentary-like study of three women in a maternity ward is heightened by three remarkable performances from Eva Dahlbeck, Bibi Andersson and Ingrid Thulin. The three actresses collectively shared the Best Actress prize at the 1958 Cannes Film Festival. This rarely shown effort from a master also features performances by Bergman veterans Erland Josephson and Max Von Sydow.
