(Rak ti Khon Kaen, Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Thailand/UK/Germany/France/Malaysia/South Korea/Mexico/US/Norway 2015, 122 min., DCP)
Thai filmmaker Weeresethakul’s eighth feature film is the story of Jenjira (Jenjira Pongpas), a volunteer nurse at a temporary clinic set up in an abandoned school. Soldiers with a mysterious sleeping sickness are transferred to the clinic, and Jenjira takes a special interest in Itt (Banlop Lomnoi), who has no family or visitors. She also befriends Keng (Jarinpattra Rueangram), a young medium who claims to help visitors communicate with the comatose men. As the doctors attempt several treatments in an effort to reach the soldiers, revelations about an ancient site located beneath the clinic offer clues to the sickness.
