(Frank Borzage, US 1925, 71 min., 35mm)
At the end of the nineteenth century, Lady Catherine (Joan Crawford), who is to be married to Lord Cheney (Derek Glynne), is instead persuaded to elope with Hugh Portenous (Frank Braidwood), the best man. Thirty years later, history seems destined to repeat itself as Catherine’s daughter-in-law, Elizabeth (Eleanor Boardman) has invited the couple to the country for the weekend as she’s considering running away with Edward Lutton (Malcolm McGregor) and wants to see how the illicit relationship turned out. This comedic drama is based on a play by W. Somerset Maugham and is an excellent example of director Frank Borzage’s silent work.
Live piano accompaniment by Dr. Philip C. Carli.
