(Fritz Lang, US 1952, 105 min., 35mm)
From German director Fritz Lang's (M, Metropolis) American period, this noir melodrama, adapted from the Clifford Odets play, opens with Barbara Stanwyck as a fallen woman returning to a seaside hamlet to find unstable domesticity with a simpleminded fisherman (Paul Douglas). But she is soon ensnared in the adulterous nets of Robert Ryan's boozy interloper. In what was her largest part to-date, Marilyn Monroe co-stars as a flighty cannery worker.
35mm print from the George Eastman Museum collection.
