(Steven Spielberg, US 1977, 137 min., DCP)
Spielberg wrote and directed this remarkable picture—a gathering of greats, including celebrated French director François Truffaut in his only English-speaking role, Vilmos Zsigmond behind the camera, and John Williams providing the score. Richard Dreyfuss takes the lead as an ordinary man meeting extraordinary happenings and extraterrestrial beings. Faced with inexplicable, supernatural occurrences, everyman and expert alike are left dumbfounded, struggling to grasp the significance of an alien motif of five repeating tones. The film was shot in Black Hills National Forest, Mohave Desert, and around Devil’s Tower National Monument.
