(King Vidor, US 1928, 98 min., 16mm)
In one of the most moving statements about the perils of the American Dream, an eager young man seeks fame and fortune in New York. But he must ultimately reconcile his fantasies of success with the reality of his daily life as a faceless employee for a large business. Director King Vidor pulled out all the stops in this film, buoyed by his tremendous success at M-G-M. He used hidden cameras, scale models, reflections, and double-exposures, and his camera moves unfettered in a way that wouldn’t be possible in the early sound era. A 16mm acetate print made in 1952 from a nitrate negative that is now completely lost.
Live piano accompaniment by Dr. Philip Carli.
