(Robert Siodmak, US 1948, 95 min., 35mm)
Richard Conte stars as hoodlum Martin Rome. Already wounded in a robbery attempt, he is facing a lifetime in prison. Neighborhood cop Vittorio Candella (Victor Mature, fresh off his performance in Kiss of Death the year before), visits Rome in the hospital, and urges him to confess to a previous killing that will save an innocent man from the death penalty. When Rome refuses to cooperate, Candella tries to put the pieces of the crime together only to discover that the fallout is further reaching than he anticipated. “Cry of the City…is tough and hard and stark, full of red-blooded action, yet so well developed in characterization and plot that it will appeal to mature film-goers.” – Daily Boston Globe, October 29, 1948
