Cymbeline
(Lucius Henderson, US 1913, 22 min., 35mm)

Macbeth
(Arthur Bourchier, Germany 1913, 58 min., 35mm)

35mm Preservation print

Arthur Bourchier was a noted Shakespearean actor in the first decades of the twentieth century. He was also a producer and theater manager, so it is perhaps no surprise that he attempted to move into the new medium of film, utilizing his background and resources. Bourchier traveled to Heidelberg, Germany to film his Macbeth, though the cast was British, including his wife, Violet Vanbrugh, as Lady Macbeth. It turned out to be the only film that Bourchier would direct, and may have been lost if not for the preservation efforts of the George Eastman Museum. Preceded by Cymbeline and produced by the New York City-based Thanhouser Company.

With live piano accompaniment by Dr. Philip Carli.
