Cyrano

(Joe Wright, UK/Canada/US 2021, 123 min., DCP)

The legend of Cyrano de Bergerac is put to music in this adaptation of Erica Schmidt’s 2008 stage production. Peter Dinklage plays Cyrano, warrior poet, returned from war and madly in unrequited love with his cousin, Roxanne (Haley Bennett). Wanting to marry for love, Roxanne is infatuated with newly-recruited soldier Christian (Kelvin Harrison, Jr.). Christian would return her affection, but can’t put it into words, so Cyrano acts as their go-between, speaking his own love to Roxanne with Christian’s signature. Lavish in its staging and costume design, and filled with lovely ballads, this re-imagining stays true to the spirit of the original play.
