(Michael Gordon, US 1950, 113 min., 35mm)
One of Stanley Kramer’s earliest producing efforts is this adaptation of the nineteenth century play by Edmond Rostand. José Ferrer plays the title role of the seventeenth century French warrior-poet with the large nose. Cyrano pines for Roxane (Mala Powers) but declines to tell her, fearing that his physical defect renders him unattractive. When Roxane reveals to Cyrano that she has fallen in love with Christian (William Prince) without ever having talked to him, she asks him to befriend Christian and tell him her feelings. Discovering that Christian doesn’t have the ability to woo Roxane, Cyrano offers to step in as his voice and live his fantasy through Christian. Ferrer earned his only Academy Award in the lead role.
