Following her disappointment at not even being considered for the major role of O-Lan in MGM’s adaptation of Pearl S. Buck’s The Good Earth (the role went to Luise Rainer, who won the Academy Award for her performance), Anna May Wong continued to search for significant roles. She found some depth in the role of Lan Yang Lin in Daughter of Shanghai. She plays a gallery owner-turned-detective hunting down a European smuggler alongside alongside government agent Kim Lee, played by Korean-American actor Philip Ahn. Wong gets to play a woman of action while going undercover as a dancer.
