The Death of Stalin

Thursday, May 13, 2021, 7:30 p.m., Dryden Theatre

(Armando Iannucci, UK/US 2017, 107 min., DCP)

The backstabbing, deceit, and treason are real, but the dialogue has changed. The real-world workings of the Soviet politburo following Josef Stalin’s stroke in 1953 were fodder for a graphic novel by Fabien Nury and Thierry Robin before being adapted for this film. Writer-director Armando Iannucci (In the Loop, Veep) casts bumbling Brits (Michael Palin, Jason Isaacs) and awkward Americans (Steve Buscemi, Jeffrey Tambor) as Krushchev and company in this darkly comic film about the banality of evil and its violent consequences.
