(Sidney Lumet, US 2007, 117 min., 35mm)
Director Sidney Lumet’s final film stars Philip Seymour Hoffman and Ethan Hawke as brothers who plan to rob their own parents’ jewelry store. Andy (Hoffman), the older brother who, despite his high-paying job has incurred debts due to his drug addiction. Hank (Hawke), the younger brother, is divorced and behind on child support payments, seeking comfort in the arms of Andy’s wife, Gina (Marisa Tomei). When Andy suggests a heist of the jewelry store, he justifies it by devising a plan with no violence where his parents would recover their loss through insurance. When Hank adds an unexpected element to the mix, the heist goes wrong and their family dynamic will never be the same.
The Philip Seymour Hoffman film series is supported by James Declan Tobin on behalf of the Sumner Roy Kates Charitable Trust.
