(William Worthington, US 1919, 56 min., 35mm)
Produced under Sessue Hayakawa’s production company, Haworth Pictures, the film stars Hayakawa as the titular artist. Tatsu (Hayakawa) hides out in the mountains producing beautiful paintings of dragons, satisfying his fervent belief that his fiancee was turned into a dragon. Tempted out of the mountains to Tokyo, Tatsu meets and falls in love with Ume-Ko (Tsuru Aoki), daughter of the famous artist Kano Indara (Edward Peil, Sr.). The two are married, but Tatsu’s happiness leads to complacency and a lack of artistic ambition. In order to prompt her husband back to his art, she devises a dangerous plan.
