(Herbert Ross, US 1984, 107 min., DCP)

Just in time for the RPO’s Pops concert performances Decades: Back to the 80s on April 7 and 8, the Dryden features the biggest dance film of the decade. Use code RPOGEM25 for 25% off tickets to the performance.

Tucked in the heart of Utah, there is a town called Bomont where rock music and dancing are forbidden. When Chicago kid Ren McCormack (Kevin Bacon) moves into town, he bristles at the restrictions while falling for Ariel (Lori Singer), the daughter of Reverend Moore (John Lithgow). In order to show his new friends the joy and freedom of dance, Ren will have to take on the school, the Reverend, and the town council in order to put on a year-end Senior Prom. One of the most successful movie soundtracks of all time, the album produced six Top 40 hits: “Footloose,” “Holding Out for a Hero,” “Dancing in the Sheets,” “Let’s Hear It for the Boy,” “Almost Paradise,” and “I’m Free.”
