More distraught by her roommate and best friend, Sophie, moving to Tribeca than her recent breakup with her boyfriend, Frances (Greta Gerwig) is adrift in New York City. She is an apprentice at a dance company with aspirations to move to the main company, but with little encouragement. With barely enough money to survive, she moves from apartment to apartment, staying with friends and acquaintances. All the while, she pines for the friendship she seems to have lost as Sophie moves on with her life and her relationship. Still, Frances’s love of life (and occasional dancing in the street) keeps her going as she searches for her place in this world and the satisfaction of being who she is, not who she was. Co-written by Gerwig and director Noah Baumbach, this film captures the wayward nature of that time between extended adolescence and true adulthood.
