(Jordan Peele, US 2017, 104 min., DCP)
Writer-director Jordan Peele’s stunning debut film is this race-inflected horror film. When Chris Washington (Daniel Kaluuya) finally relents to meet the family of his girlfriend (Allison Williams), they embark on a weekend getaway in Upstate New York. As soon as they arrive, Chris knows that something is wrong. His phone won’t charge, the family continuously asks personal questions, and the hired help seems barely able to function. Trapped in a rural nightmare, Chris investigates the sinister situation only to reveal the horrific truth. A terrific supporting cast, including Bradley Whitford, Catherine Keener, LaKeith Stanfield, and Caleb Landry Jones, bring Peele’s words to life on his way to becoming the first Black writer to win the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. The film made its debut on the Sight and Sound magazine's list of The Greatest Films of All Time at #95.
