This pre-Code musical was based on a 1927 stage show of the same name and remade in 1947. Tom Marlowe (Stanley Smith) is the Tait College football star. He would rather hang out with Connie Lane (Mary Lawlor) and do the Varsity Drag than focus on his studies, which threatens his status for the big game. Meanwhile, wise-cracking freshman Bobby Randall (Gus Shy) pursues the campus vamp, Babe (Bessie Love). Professor Kenyon (Frank McGlynn) offers to help Tom with his studies, but will it be enough to get him back on the team in time? A standard of the time, this campus comedy features songs written by Lew Brown, B.G. DeSylva, and Ray Henderson, including “The Best Things in Life are Free.”
