(Ida Lupino, US 1953, 71 min., 35mm)
Ida Lupino directs this story of two fishermen (Frank Lovejoy and Edmond O’Brien) taken hostage by the psychopathic, mass-murdering title character (William Talman). Inspired by a true story, Lupino and husband/co-writer Collier Young interviewed and got releases from the two abducted men in order to incorporate their lives into the script. The almost unbearably suspenseful dark jewel of Lupino’s directorial career, The Hitch-Hiker is also the only classical film noir ever directed by a woman. Julie Grossman, author of Ida Lupino, Director will be present to introduce the film and participate in a post-screening discussion.
