Gods and Monsters
(Bill Condon, UK/US 1998, 105 min., 35mm)
Bill Condon’s Academy Award-winning adaptation of Christopher Bram’s 1995 novel Father of Frankenstein dramatizes the final days of the life of legendary filmmaker James Whale (played in an Oscar-nominated turn by Ian McKellen). The once celebrated creator of cinematic masterpieces like Frankenstein, The Bride of Frankenstein, and The Invisible Man, Whale is now long retired and in ailing health, finding it increasingly difficult to distinguish between the lonesome present and the beckoning ghosts of his past. Doted on by his loyal, but often disapproving housekeeper (McKellen’s fellow Oscar nominee, Lynn Redgrave), Whale finds an unexpected chance at connection with the arrival of a handsome new gardener (Brendan Fraser). The unlikely friendship the pair embark on has unintended and lasting consequences on each of the men’s lives.
