The New York City-based Kapur family is in disorder. The father has died and mother Jenny (Jaya Bachchan) is struggling to keep the family restaurant open. Daughter Naina (Preity Zinta) is studying for an M.B.A. with her friend Rohit (Saif Ali Khan), whom she sees everyday, while tensions exists between mother-in-law Lajjo (Sushma Seth) and her grandchildren — Shiv (Athit Naik), who walks with a brace, and adopted Gia (Jhanak Shukla). They pray for a savior and seem to have their prayers answered when Aman (Shah Rukh Khan) moves in across the street with his uncle. Aman has a positive life attitude and immediately has an effect on the Kapurs, but when Naina begins to have feelings for him, a dark secret will keep them apart. Delayed for six months when Khan was forced to have spinal surgery due to an injury he sustained on the set of Shakti (2002), the film was one of the first international productions to shoot in New York after 9/11.
