Written and directed by Isabel Sandoval, LINGUA FRANCA follows an undocumented Filipina trans woman Olivia (Isabel Sandoval) after she has secured a job as a live-in caregiver for Olga (Lynn Cohen), an elderly Russian woman in Brooklyn’s Brighton Beach neighborhood. Olivia’s main priority is to secure a green card to stay in America. But when she unexpectedly becomes romantically involved with Olga’s adult grandson Alex (Eamon Farren), issues around identity, civil rights and immigration threatens her very existence.

About This Series

Unbordering Migration in the Americas

“Unbordering Migration: Causes, Experiences, Identities” is a year-long series of lectures, workshops, and films organized by the Humanities Center of the University of Rochester and funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Running from September, 2021 to May, 2022, the keystone of this series will be a weekend of films dedicated to the subject, screening at The Dryden Theatre February 24-26.
