(Roger Corman, US 1960, 73 min., DCP)
Director Roger Corman’s iconic horror comedy will leaf you laughing in the aisles. Clumsy florist assistant Seymour Krelboined (Jonathan Haze) is on the verge of getting fired again when he reveals that he has been cross-pollinating a venus fly trap with a butterwort. Hoping that it will attract new clientele to the shop, Seymour brings the plant to work only to discover that this new species has a taste for human blood. Filled with Borscht Belt humor and surprisingly effective budget special effects (not to mention a memorable cameo by a young Jack Nicholson), Corman’s quick and quick-witted film presaged a career producing hundreds of similar films, yet this one remains unique.
