(Alfred Hitchcock, UK 1927, 92 min., DCP)
The Lodger is a suspenseful Jack-the-Ripper tale that features one of the master's most familiar themes: an innocent man unjustly accused. In this case, a mysterious lodger in a London apartment house (Ivor Novello) is blamed for the crimes of a deranged serial killer who targets blondes. Relying almost completely on images and deft editing, Hitch creates an atmosphere of palpable unease to convey the tormented psychology of his thriller. Hitchcock himself referred to The Lodger as the “first true Hitchcock movie.”
