Not all Rochester stars were born in Rochester. Leading man Bert Lytell featured prominently in the Baker Theater stock company on North Fitzhugh Street and Cook’s Opera House on South Avenue in the first years of the 20th century before moving to films in 1917. In his first film he embodied the character of Michael Lanyard, “The Lone Wolf,” a gentleman burglar created by Louis Joseph Vance in a series of novels. Lytell became a minor film star with this role and turned in four more films as The Lone Wolf through 1930. This second in the series finds Lanyard nearly caught rifling through a home in a ritzy part of town. He escapes to the house next door and into a masque ball where he meets Marcia (Billie Dove), whom he is immediately infatuated with. When jewelry goes missing, The Lone Wolf is suspected, and Lanyard must find the real thief to clear his name and save his relationship with Marcia.
