John Gilbert (the clear analog for Brad Pitt’s Jack Conrad in Babylon) and Greta Garbo tackle Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina for MGM. Trapped in a cruel and loveless marriage to Alexei (Brandon Hurst), Anna (Garbo) risks it all for a chance at true love with dashing cavalry officer Vronsky (Gilbert). Their affair scandalizes the social circles of the St. Petersburg elite, which forces the young lovers to flee to Italy in search of happiness. Produced with both a happy Hollywood ending and another truer to the source material, this film preservation provides both for comparison.

Live piano accompaniment by Philip C. Carli.
