(Kelly Reichardt, US 2025, 110 min., DCP)
Director Kelly Reichardt’s (Meek’s Cutoff, Certain Women, First Cow) newest film examines an unfulfilled life from the point of view of a failed architect. James Mooney (Josh O’Connor) is a family man with two sons who feels that he’s meant for something greater. In response he conceives of a plan to steal four Arthur Dove paintings from the local museum that he and his family frequents. His team consists of two friends with little to no thieving experience, leading to a botched heist and a haphazard flight from authority. Reminiscent of 1970s character-driven crime stories such as Dog Day Afternoon, the film is set against the dawn of anti-Vietnam War protests, starkly contrasting James’s seemingly sheltered life.
