(Busby Berkeley, US 1942, 103 min., 35mm)
We kick off our Judy Garland centennial celebration, while also providing our monthly entry in the Make Mine Musicals series, with this wartime musical, which provided Judy with her first adult role. She was paired with Gene Kelly in his screen debut, a touching, dramatic musical about an up-and-coming vaudeville duo dreaming of stardom on the eve of World War I. Already an accomplished choreographer and theater actor, Kelly intended to return to Broadway after this film, but its smash success convinced him to stay in Hollywood. The friendship between Garland and Kelly lasted until her death and provided a support system for Judy later in her career, making Summer Stock possible. Post-film discussion with Michael Lasser.
