(Barbra Streisand, US 1996, 126 min., 35mm)
Trying her hand at romantic comedy, director Barbra Streisand casts actress Barbra Streisand as Rose Morgan, a middle-aged literature professor who still believes in love. When her overbearing mother (Lauren Bacall) answers a personal ad placed by fellow Columbia University professor Gregory Larkin (Jeff Bridges) on her behalf, they begin a relationship. But Gregory, fearing physical intimacy, wants a relationship based on shared interests while Rose still yearns for more. As they try to navigate their relationship, Rose comes to the realization that beauty comes from self-confidence, changing the way she views herself and Gregory. Streisand’s final directorial effort blends her beauty and comedy in equal measure.
