In the wilds of Brazil in the 18th century, Jesuit missionary Father Gabriel (Jeremy Irons) fights to protect native Indians from being exterminated or sold into slavery by the colonizing Portuguese. Eventually, the priest finds an unlikely ally in former slave trader Rodrigo Mendoza (Robert DeNiro), but the two have personal philosophies that clash when faced with the invading armies. The ravishing cinematography by Chris Menges won him an Oscar, and the awe-inspiring score by Ennio Morricone has sold millions of records around the world.
