(Bennett Miller, US 2011, 133 min., 35mm)
Baseball is a business, and all teams are in the business of winning. But not all teams can afford the same payroll for their players. Enter Billy Beane (Brad Pitt), a former player himself and General Manager for the Oakland A’s, who is seeking to maximize low-cost investments on players by exploiting advantages undervalued by other teams, much to the chagrin of his scouts, coaching staff, and the players themselves. By merging the mathematics of business and of the sport, Beane inaugurates a new way of looking at the sport that will change the business forever. Based on the true story and the non-fiction book by Michael Lewis, Moneyball is a look at a rebel on the vanguard. Philip Seymour Hoffman plays legendary manager Art Howe, skeptical of Beane’s new approach and the effect it would have on his team.
John DiTullio, Dale Budziszewski, and Mark Maira from DiTullio and Dale on Radio 95.1 will be on hand to introduce the film and participate in a post-screening discussion.
The Philip Seymour Hoffman film series is supported by James Declan Tobin on behalf of the Sumner Roy Kates Charitable Trust.
