Mr. Deeds Goes to Town

Tuesday, January 4, 2022, 7:30 p.m., Dryden Theatre

(Frank Capra, US 1936, 115 min., DCP)

Resolution #1: Be more generous. Gary Cooper plays the title character in this quintessential Capra story of a country fellow who inherits a fortune and tries to do the right thing with it, much to the dismay of everyone around him. This lighthearted and witty film is the first to show what would become the Capra trademark: an ordinary man trying to do good and the corrupt officials who try to stop him. Watch for the great Jean Arthur as a fast-talking journalist in the film that gave Capra his second Oscar for Best Director.
