We’re celebrating Canada Day with this program of live-action short films produced by the National Film Board. The Board was created by the national government in 1939 with the mandate “to interpret Canada to Canadians and other nations.” By 1945 the NFB had grown into one of the world's largest film studios, and had released more than 500 films. During the postwar decade, production expanded into new areas: the first dramatic films were made, and new techniques were explored in animation, complementing the didactic films of the war years. To this day, the NFB creates innovative and instructional films, providing a crucial proving ground for Canadian filmmakers. This program covers 45 years in the Board’s history, with humo(u)r, heart, and history.
