(Ernst Lubitsch, US 1939, 110 min., 35mm)
After her comrades are lured by the temptations of Paris, Russian agent Ninotchka (Greta Garbo) travels to France to bring them back. Once she encounters the spry and clever Count Leon d’Algout (Melvyn Douglas), however, her talents for resisting the delights of capitalism begin to wear off. Billed as the film in which “Garbo laughs,” Ninotchka captures the enchantments of the golden age of the romantic comedy with its witty script, bubbly performances, and the indefinable Lubitsch touch.
