(Cecil B. DeMille, US 1940, 126 min., 35mm nitrate)
Director Cecil B. DeMille was back in epic form following up his Palme d'Or-winning Union Pacific with another adventure of the historical West. Set amongst the prairies of Saskatchewan during a conflict between mounties and first nations peoples, Texas Ranger Dusty Rivers (Gary Cooper) rides into the fort with a warrant for the arrest of whiskey runner Jacques Corbeau (George Bancroft). There he falls in love with nurse April Logan (Madeleine Carroll) and is recruited to help fend off an attack. Melodrama abounds in this big-budget Technicolor adventure, with astonishing stunts and action, all in the best possible format.
