(Arthur Hiller, US 1970, 101 min., DCP)
A slice of comedic modernity, 1970s-style. This original script by Neil Simon follows married couple George and Gwen Kellerman (Jack Lemmon and Sandy Dennis) as they try to travel from Ohio to New York City for George’s interview for a better position in his company. George has a romantic big-city escapade planned for them around the interview, to be executed according to his time schedule. But when their plane is delayed by fog and re-routed to Boston, they have to find a way back to New York in time for the interview. Unfortunately, everyone else has the same idea. Indignities abound in the form of trains, cabs, labor strikes, cops, kidnapping, downpours, broken teeth, and vicious dogs. A wild and charming farce about modern life, this film was Paramount’s biggest hit of the year.
