The Pebble and the Penguin

Thursday, July 27, 2023, 7:30 p.m., Dryden Theatre

(Don Bluth, Gary Goldman, US 1995, 74 min., 35mm)

The final film from Don Bluth Entertainment has the director finding inspiration in the mating rituals of the Adélie penguins of Antarctica. Following their long-held tradition, Hubie (Martin Short), a shy and clumsy penguin, wants to find a pebble to present to Marina (Annie Golden) so that they can be mated. Wishing on a star, an emerald falls from the sky, but when he runs to propose to Marina, he is thwarted by his rival, Drake (Tim Curry), who throws him into the water. Hubie’s adventures take him to a zoo, where he meets Rocko (Jim Belushi) and the two must make their way back to Antarctica to save Marina.

With a score by Mark Watters and songs by Barry Manilow, the music in the film is extremely memorable, and Watters will be on-hand to introduce the film and talk about his creative process in writing the music for the film.
