The Pride and the Passion

Saturday, April 2, 2022, 7:30 p.m., Dryden Theatre

(Stanley Kramer, US 1957, 132 min., 35mm)

The unusual trio of Cary Grant, Frank Sinatra, and Sophia Loren (in her first English role) star in this historical epic that is, in the words of director Stanley Kramer, “a simple but powerful study of human courage.” Grant is Anthony Trumbell, a British naval captain sent to Spain during the Napoleonic Wars to help repel the French. His mission is to retrieve a massive artillery cannon, but the local guerilla fighter, Miguel (Sinatra), insists that it first be moved to drive the French out of his hometown. The two men and 200 peasants begin the 600-mile journey with the seven-ton cannon, but along the way are distracted by Miguel’s lover, Juana (Loren), with whom Trumbell has fallen in love.
