Queen Christina

(Rouben Mamoulian, US 1933, 99 mn., 35mm)

Greta Garbo delivers one of her best performances as the beautiful and powerful Queen Christina of Sweden. Loosely based on the real Queen Christina, who assumed the throne in 1632 at the age of six, this fictionalized love story depicts one of the most highly educated women of the seventeenth century who often dressed as a man and had sworn off marriage. When Queen Christina unexpectedly falls in love with a Spanish ambassador, she must navigate a momentous choice between loyalty to her people and following her heart. This sumptuous film contains what is often considered Garbo's finest performance, revealed in searing scenes of her strength, sorrow, weaknesses, joy and passion.
