In 1930s Great Britain, Miss Kenton (Emma Thompson) joins the estate at Darlington Hall, home of the Earl of Darlington, as a housekeeper. Her kind-hearted ways chafe against the strict, formal traditions preferred by Darlington’s butler, Stevens (Anthony Hopkins). When Lord Darlington (James Fox) hosts a conference of fascist-sympathizing British and European aristocrats, Stevens is caught in the middle when he is ordered to release two newly-appointed refugee German-Jewish maids. Kenton can sense his inner struggles and is drawn to him, but Stevens’s duty will not allow him to return her affection. When an offer of marriage comes to Kenton, she has to decide whether to stay with Stevens, or live her life. This E. M. Forster adaptation garnered eight Academy Award nominations, including one each for Ismail Merchant and James Ivory.
