San Francisco

Saturday, July 9, 2022, 7:30 p.m., Dryden Theatre

(W. S. Van Dyke, US 1936, 115 min., 16mm)

In turn-of-the-century San Francisco, the Barbary Coast district is full of dance halls, saloons, and riff raff. Blackie Norton (Clark Gable), owner of the Paradise Cafe, is encouraged to run for supervisor to reform outdated city ordinances. Supported by his childhood friend (Spencer Tracy) and Mary Blake (Jeannette MacDonald), a new singer in his club, he accepts the challenge, but is opposed by rival owner (Jack Holt), leading to a knock-down, drag-out campaign, with Mary’s fate in the balance. Beginning with a fire and ending with the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, this early spectacle delights in its destruction, using ingenious sets and back projection.
