A truly international filmmaker, Sergei Parajanov is responsible for some of the best films in the history of three countries: Armenia, Georgia, and Ukraine. Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors is almost unanimously considered the greatest masterpiece of Ukrainian cinema. This deeply lyrical, tragic, at times surreal, love story based on Hutsul (an ethnic group in Western Ukraine) folklore received worldwide acclaim and is still praised for its breathtaking color cinematography.

Donations will be collected for ROC Maidan.

Masterpieces of Ukrainian Cinema

Despite its century-long history, Ukrainian cinema has remained largely unknown in the United States. From the silent period to today, this cinema has remained a vital outlet for expressing emotions and ideas critical to the life of the people of Ukraine, but distribution in the US has been inconsistent throughout its history. This May at the Dryden Theatre, experience a small selection of films from Ukraine's rich cinematic history, chosen by Senior Curator Peter Bagrov. From the fertile ground of the silent period to the avant-garde cinema of the 1970s, these films speak to the hearts and souls of the Ukrainian people.
