(Phil Alden Robinson, US 1992, 126 min., DCP)
Returning to his spy roots from Three Days of the Condor and his con-man roots of The Sting, Robert Redford plays Martin Bishop, a 1960’s hacktivist who now runs a consulting firm that exposes the weaknesses in corporate security. He and his team are approached by the NSA to break in and steal a cryptography device that could harm national security. Helping him plan the job are Donald Crease (Sidney Poitier), who was fired by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) after twenty-two years of service; Darren “Mother” Roskow (Dan Aykroyd), a convicted robber; Carl Arbogast (River Phoenix), a young prodigy Marty caught hacking into the Oakland City School District computer system to change his grades; and Irwin “Whistler” Emery (David Strathairn), a blind telecommunications expert. When true loyalties are exposed, Bishop must finish the job while simultaneously ensuring that the device does not fall into the wrong hands. This exciting late-career thriller also stars Mary McDonnell and Ben Kingsley.
