James Jones’s second novel jumps to the period after World War II and a returning veteran attempting to put his life back together. Dave Hirsh (Frank Sinatra) returns home after sixteen years away, accompanied by Ginny Moorehead (Shirley MacLaine), whom he met on his last drunken night in Chicago. There he reconnects with his brother, Frank (Arthur Kennedy), whose standing in the community is affected by Dave’s sudden appearance. When Professor French (Larry Gates) and his daughter, Gwen (Martha Hyer), show an interest in Dave’s published novels, he settles in to resume writing. Caught between the cool Gwen and the affectionate Ginny, Dave must face his past to build a new future, while receiving questionable advice from gambler Bama (Dean Martin).
